A Clayton man was among two suspects charged with stealing copper wire from a Delmarva Power substation on Monday, Sept. 6.
The crime occurred at 1:10 a.m., at 401 Eagle Run Road, Newark, according to State Police.
Troopers received a report that two men were removing spools of copper wire from the site.
When police arrived, two men fled from the site on foot through holes that they had cut in the chain link fence surrounding the substation. Troopers were able to catch both men a short distance away in the Christiana Town Center after a brief foot pursuit.
One of the troopers suffered a cut to his head while running through the chain link fence in an attempt to catch the defendants. He was taken to Christiana Hospital where he was treated and released.
The suspects were identified as Jesse Lotman, 23, of Clayton, and Timothy Whitt, 25, of Elkton, Md.
Lotman and Whitt were charged with theft, second degree conspiracy, resisting arrest, second degree criminal trespassing, and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony. They were arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 11 and committed to the Howard Young Correctional Institution for lack of $6,350 secured bail each while awaiting another court appearance.
