A Dover man and woman have been charged after they allegedly committed an armed robbery.

The incident took place March 8 at 3 p.m., when the male victim was approached by a woman in the parking lot at the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino, said Dover Police Department spokesman Lt. Tim Stump.

The woman, identified as Shelva Smith, 22, asked for a ride to the Towne Point neighborhood near K-Mart, Stump said.

However, after the two arrived in Towne Point and Smith got out of the car, a man came up and threatened to shoot the driver unless he handed over his money. The driver gave the gunman his cash, and the robber fled, Stump said.

Working with Dover Downs security personnel, police identified Smith and the gunman, James Durham, 25.

Smith and Durham were arrested March 9 during a traffic stop by Dover Police and state probation and parole officers.

Both were charged with robbery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and conspiracy; Durham faces an additional charge of wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony.

Durham was jailed at the Vaughn Correctional Center near Smyrna in default of a $45,000 secured bond; Smith later was released after posting a $25,000 secured bond.
