This fall, the Smyrna High varsity volleyball team will play in the high school’s brand new gymnasium for the first time.

Although the gym has changed, the team’s focus has not.

“Our goals stay the same – to do whatever we need to do to make the state tournament and be one of the top 16 teams in the state,” said head coach Danny Wandless. “Every game is an opportunity to earn points to reach our goal.”

The Eagles’ roster features five seniors this year: Danielle Oscar, Nicole Thompson, Olivia Hughes, Olivia Everett and Krysta Morrison.

Wandless said the team as a whole is more well-rounded than in the past.

“We’re deeper at each position than in any year I’ve seen,” he said.

Coach Wandless is assisted by Marc Deisem, Robin Bautista and Jeff Woomer.

The Eagles are set to open the season at home on Sept. 14 against Cape Henlopen.
