George R. McFarland of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Smyrna, Del., passed away on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at Johns Hopkins Medical Center in Baltimore, Md. He was 72.
Mr. McFarland was born January 8, 1938 in Greensburg, Pa., the son of the late John C. McFarland and Cecelia V. Barndollar McFarland.
He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Clarion University in Clarion, Pa., where he played football and was a member of Alpha Gamma Phi, and went on to receive his master's degree from West Chester University.
Mr. McFarland worked as a teacher for Concord High School where he retired after 38 years of service.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Ocean City, Md., the Elks Lodge, Gulf Shore Singles, Beach Singles, and Merry Mariners. He enjoyed attending University Of Delaware football games and playing tennis. Other interests included dancing, traveling, coaching and playing cards.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 40 years, Janet L. McFarland in 2003; a son, Brad K. McFarland in 1993; his brother, John "Bud" McFarland; and a special friend, Fran Kennedy.
He is survived by a son, Brian P. McFarland of Hockessin; his companion, Judy Thompson of Cape Coral, Fla.; a sister, Martha Smith of Winchester, Ind.; a brother, William McFarland and his wife Marci, of Ocean City, Md.; and many nieces, nephews, and close family friends.
A viewing for family and friends will be held Tuesday, July 13 from 6-8 p.m., and again on Wednesday, July 14, from 10-11 a.m. in Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street, Smyrna, Del. Funeral services will be offered at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 14. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna, Del.
