Charles L. Hall, Sr., 91, of Dover, DE and formerly of Middletown and Smyrna, DE passed away peacefully on Friday, August 1, 2008 at Kent General Hospital/Bayhealth in Dover.
Born in Smyrna, DE on August 23, 1916, he was the son of the late John and Florence Dolly (Rementer) Hall.
Mr. Hall enlisted with the Delaware National Guard 261st Coast Artillery Regiment (Harbor Defense) during WWII. Later he served as a cadre for a new artillery unit and was stationed in Greenland. As an enlisted man, he attended officer candidate school at Fort Monmouth, NJ. Following the war, he served as an Artillery Battery Commander in Middletown and Smyrna and supported the transition of the 261st from an artillery regiment to a signal command when he retired as a Major from the National Guard.
In 1946, Charles, along with his brother, Jim, started a Hudson automobile and farm equipment dealership in Middletown and in 1949 switched from the Hudson to a Buick dealership. In 1957 he added the Pontiac franchise and moved the dealership to Smyrna.
During the 70’s, he was elected two terms as the Delaware Dealer Representative to the National Automobile Dealer Association, where he served on the Small Dealer Council.
While residing in Middletown, Mr. Hall served as a vestryman at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church and served as President of the Middletown School Board. He was also a charter member of the Dover Elks and a 32nd Degree Mason A.F. & A.M.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sande; several brothers; and a sister.
He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Eva (Sanders) Hall; two sons, Charles Jr., and Robert; seven grandchildren, Andrew, Jennifer, Chad, Ryan, Darse, Dar and Damien; and two great-grandchildren.
A committal service will be held 2 pm on Thursday, August 7, 2008 at Delaware Veteran’s Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE with military honors conducted by the Delaware National Guard.
