OBITUARY: George John Franklin Sr.

George John Franklin Sr. went home to be with the Lord on March 1, 2010. Beloved husband of 55 years to the late Margaret E. Franklin (nee Rinnier), father of Robert L. Franklin and his wife, Diane of San Antonio, TX; George John Franklin, Jr. and his wife, Susan of Clayton, NJ; John B. Franklin and Carol of Clayton, DE; Denise M. Henry and her husband, Patrick of Clayton, DE; Lauren F. Franklin and his wife Debbie of Clayton, NJ; Mark W. Franklin and his wife Liz of Hardingville, NJ; and Dawn D. Proto and her husband Mike of Pilesgrove, NJ; brother of the late Donald and Robert Franklin, son of the late George Joseph and Mignon (nee Finn) Franklin; grandfather of 19, great grandfather of 24.

George was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. In 1956 he moved to Oak Valley in Deptford, NJ, residing there until 1985, when he relocated to Clayton, DE.

He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II and drove an ambulance for the MASH unit.

He was a taxi cab driver for 40 years with Yellow Cab and then for 10 years with United Cab, both in Philadelphia, before his retirement in 1990.

George was a member of the American Legion in Woodbury, NJ and also the Calvary Baptist Church in Clayton, DE. He loved music, especially big band, and played the trumpet. He enjoyed NASCAR and also working on cars.

Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Friday, March 5, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hardingville Bible Church, 284 Whig Lane Road, Monroeville, NJ. Funeral services were at 12 p.m. at the church. Interment was at the Gloucester County Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Williamstown.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in his memory to the Alzheimer’s Association Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market Street, Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 or via www.alz.org/desjsepa.
