Alberta B. Morris, of Smyrna, Delaware passed away Sunday, August 1, 2010 at Capital Health Care in Dover. She was 82.

Alberta was born on June 14, 1928 in Milford to Walter D. and Bessie E. Betts.

Upon graduation from cosmetology school she owned and operated her own beauty shop in Clayton. Alberta also worked at Diamond Ice and Coal Company, Suburban Propane, and Scott Nursing Home. In her later years she worked for the Town of Smyrna as a Crossing Guard at the corner of School Lane and Commerce Street for many years.

She was very active as a volunteer and with her political party. She served as the president of the Citizens Hose Co. No. 1 Ladies Auxiliary for over 20 years. Since Dover Fire Company had no organized auxiliary, she was often called upon to assist the Dover Volunteer Fire Company by preparing and serving food and beverages during emergency responses. Her volunteer efforts led the Dover Fire Company to recognize her for her time and commitment by naming her the honorary President of the Dover Fire Company Auxiliary.

Alberta was known around Smyrna and Dover as the person to call when you needed something done. She cherished the friends she met and helped over the years.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth D. Spicer and Lurietta Draper.

Alberta is survived by her husband of 61 years, Benjamin Franklin Morris III; three daughters and sons-in law, Lynn M. and Jehu Banks, Lea and Lee Dulin, B. Franklin and Dorothy Morris, all of Clayton, and Alice Louise and David Jester of Chesapeake, Va.

Alberta had seven grandchildren, Larry and Gail Drummond, Lee and Marcia Dulin, Kim and Mike Wheatley, Sarah Peachey, DJ Jester, B. Franklin Morris V, and Rebecca Lea Morris. She also had seven great-grandchildren.

Alberta never tired of talking about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who held a special place in her heart.

Services will be held Friday, August 6 at 11 a.m., at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday, August 5 from 7-9 p.m., and again on Friday morning at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association, Delaware Valley Chapter, 399 Market St., Ste. 102, Phila., PA 19106.
