Dr. Fred A. Englert Jr., formerly of Smyrna, passed away on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford, after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer’s. He was 86.
Fred was born to Fred and Anna (Lukat) Englert in Brooklyn, New York on February 22, 1923. After attaining an academic diploma at the Newtown High School, New York, NY on January 29, 1941, he attended and later graduated from The New York School of Chiropractic on June 15, 1945 receiving his degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine. On May 28, 1944 he married Dorothy Ann Fritsch, also of New York, both moved to the Smyrna – Clayton area shortly after his graduation.
He thoroughly enjoyed serving his community through his Chiropractic practices in Smyrna, Dover and Seaford; retiring after 47 years. Other interests included his membership in Harmony Lodge No. 13, and his avid love of outdoor sports including boating, fishing, crabbing and clamming in the waters of the Delaware Bay, Chester and Sassafras Rivers, Indian River Inlet, and Lake Como. He also maintained an interest in pistol and rifle marksmanship. Fred will be remembered for his resounding laughter during cherished visits with family and close friends.
Fred is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy Ann and Les Wick of Cottage Grove, MN, his son, Fred A. Englert, II of Suwanee, GA, his grandchildren, David (D.C.) and Mimi Wick of Cottage Grove, MN, Daniel and Nicole Wick from Newport, MN, Eric Englert of New York City, NY, and Kristen Englert of Suwanee, Georgia. He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Adele and Robert Rehbein of Brattleboro, VT, his brother- and sister-in-law, Paul and Gerda Fritsch of Bayshore, New York, and his sister-in-law, Rose Fritsch of New York, NY.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Ann (Fritsch) Englert who passed in 1977, his son, Baby Englert who passed at birth in 1950, his father and mother Fred and Anna Englert, and close friends – Mae Northwood, Dawson and Virginia Willis, and Gene and Harriet Christmann.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the skilled and compassionate staff and caregivers of the Country Rest Home in Greenwood, DE where Fred lived for the past four years.
Services will be held Thursday, June 4 at 2 p.m., at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce Street, Smyrna, where friends may call from noon until 2 p.m. Masonic services will be held at 1:45 p.m. Burial will be at the family gravesite at Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.
