On Feb. 3, Delaware Congressman Mike Castle questioned U.S. Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis about opportunities for job growth, sustainability, and training at a hearing before the U.S. House of Representative's Education and Labor Committee. Secretary Solis was testifying on the Obama Administration's labor agenda and proposed jobs plan.
"With unemployment at 10 percent nationally, and 9 percent in Delaware, it was important to hear the Secretary outline the Administration's proposed labor agenda for getting Americans back to work," said Rep. Castle. "Job creation in America is not only a short-term goal, but includes the need for long-term, permanent economic. Areas like clean energy and health care technology in Delaware are examples of growing industries that have the potential to grow and compete in today's global economy.
"It is a step in the right direction to target under and unemployed, workers and match their needs with the necessary education and job training opportunities. The Administration has goals that I agree with in effort to put Americans back to work. However, the test will be if Congress can resist the urge to pile on unrelated spending."
Last November, Rep. Castle hosted local businesses, career advisors and the Delaware Secretary of Labor at Delaware Works! A Career, Skills, and Networking Expo. The Expo brought together over 30 businesses and organizations to profile job openings throughout the State, available State resources, and offer free resume and networking services for jobseekers. Over 200 Delawareans attended the event.
The Feb. 3 hearing marks the first time Secretary Solis has appeared before the House Education and Labor Committee. More than two months ago, Republican Members on the panel, including Rep. Castle, sent a letter to Committee Chairman, George Miller (D-CA) calling for Secretary Solis to come before the Committee to answer questions about rising unemployment and the state of our economy.
