Smyrna, Del. -

As most of you know as you read my monthly articles I make every effort to keep you posted on events involving Levy Court and what is happening or about to happen. Within the past nine months we have been fortunate that with our County Administrator in cooperation with our Director of Finance and Department Heads we completed a balanced budget. It was done on time, even though we had to make cuts in excess of three million dollars none of which affect services to our constituents. The Levy Court Commissioners are very proud of this accomplishment. All the credit is due to those mentioned above. The actual timeline on the budgetary process starts in July as the new fiscal year begins. Every director is involved and “teamwork” is the key component.

Now, at the eleventh hour, with all of our work completed and as we prepare to move into the 2009 fiscal year, it appears as though there may be some complications. With the state struggling to expand its resources, sacrifices may need to be made by all of us. Whatever they may be, you may rest comfortably, knowing that we will work diligently on your behalf.

Your county commissioners, along with the entire staff, have been very careful in their various positions to carefully guard your tax dollars. We have professionally structured programs to fulfill our obligations and allow the government to move forward without increasing your taxes. It is not our intention to present a less than positive outcome, but it is our responsibility as your county commissioners to keep you informed.

We believe the future is bright in the long run but for the moment there seems to be a few clouds on the horizon. What is important is that all of us regulate our thermostats accordingly, cut our grass less often, keep those blinds closed, install awnings where needed, clip coupons on Sunday afternoon, drink more water and less soda, use cruise control instead of speeding up and slowing down, make lists for one trip rather than ten trips for the things you forgot, check for hidden charges on all services, and if possible give up one luxury item that you really don’t need.
Let’s all hope for the best, conserve where possible, and make every effort to maintain your “quality of life.” It’s a challenge, but together we can make it work. Your Levy Court is doing it and you can do it too! Thanks for trying!
