This past weekend my husband, son and granddaughter went kayaking at Lake Como. While they were on the water I saw approximately 21 geese walking along the entire beach area. When the beach opened my 3-year-old granddaughter wanted to swim and play in the sand. The beach was in deplorable condition. My son had to carry his daughter to the water. The entire beach was covered with droppings. I asked Hekia, longtime lifeguard, when do they clean the beach. She said once a week on Fridays, but the person who cleaned the beach was on vacation. You could not lay a wash towel down let alone a beach towel. There was a gap in the fencing in the water about 30 feet long.
The town has money to do studies on every other project – what happened to the study on the beach area? It’s nice having a Recreational Coordinator for the town.
CPR is important for life saving when at risk at the beach, but what prevents airborne infections when the droppings (approximately one and one half pounds per day per goose) are collecting and laying for an entire week?
Private beaches rake morning and evening each day. Smyrna’s residents deserve better. Lake Como is convenient and a nice beach for the residents. The beach needs daily attention.
