Clayton Police officers assisted Delaware State Police in the arrest of the suspect in the robbery of The Country Store in Kenton Feb. 2.
The robbery occurred at about 7:30 p.m., when the suspect entered The Country Store on Main Street (Route 300) in Kenton armed with a baseball bat, state police said. He confronted the 62-year-old female employee at the counter and demanded money. The victim complied and handed over an undisclosed amount of cash.
The suspect fled the store on foot and ran east on Wheatley’s Pond Road (Route 300). A passer-by noticed the man running and saw the victim run out of the store after him. The passer-by picked up the victim in her car, and the two were able to contact 911 and give the location of the suspect.
Clayton Police Sr. Cpl. Todd Michelau and Pfc. Robert Bishop responded and found the suspect in a wooded area east of the store, according to Clayton Police Chief Brian Hill. Michelau caught the man and recovered all the money taken in the robbery, and turned in the suspect and the cash to state troopers.
The suspect, Brian K. Goodyear Jr., 28, of New Castle was charged with first-degree robbery, possession of a deadly weapon during the commission of a felony, and aggravated menacing, police said. He was and arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 and committed to the James T. Vaughn Corrrectional Center on $42,500 secured bail to await another court appearance.
There were no injuries during this incident, police said.
