The Middletown Hummers Parade ushered in the New Year by poking fun at celebrities and politicians. The annual event was led by Grand Marshal for Life Jack Schreppler. However, this year's event started on a serious note, with a proclamation read by Mayor Ken Branner declaring Jan. 1, 2014 as Sam Miller Day in honor of the great football player from Middletown who is battling cancer. Miller?s father, Dutch, was the inspiration for the parade which began when Dutch was ill on a New Year?s Day and friends strutted to his house to cheer him up. Schreppler said that the trophies this year featured a football theme as a tribute to Sam Miller, an All-American defensive end who recently was inducted into the University of Delaware Hall of Fame.
