The Smyrna High boys’ soccer team just missed the field of 16 for last year’s state tournament, but the Eagles are gearing up for another run at it this fall. They’ll have to do it with a younger group, though, after 11 seniors graduated from last year’s 9-6 team.
This fall, the Smyrna High varsity volleyball team will play in the high school’s brand new gymnasium for the first time. Although the gym has changed, the team’s focus has not.
With the school year rapidly approaching, fall sports practices have also shifted into high gear at Smyrna High. The varsity field hockey squad is no exception. The team has been sweating through conditioning, drills and practices as it prepares for the upcoming season.
The free Kent County Young Waterfowlers program and hunter safety training will start in Sept. 14 in Smyrna. Sessions will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays through the end of the month from 7 to 9 p.m., at instructor Larry Poore’s pole barn.

The Delaware Division of Parks and Recreation announced Aug. 16 that a new management company will oversee day-to-day operation and maintenance of Garrisons Lake Golf Course south of Smyrna. Forewinds Hospitality, which currently manages the Deerfield Golf and Tennis Club at White Clay Creek State Park, has assumed management of the facility.

At the age of 14, Taylor Dixon can already call herself a world champion horse rider. The soon-to-be freshman at Smyrna High won two first place titles at the Pinto World Championship in Tulsa, Oklahoma in early June, in the English Pleasure and Hunter Under Saddle categories in the youth senior division for ages 14 to 18. Later that month, she won first place in Hunter Under Saddle at the Paint World Show at Fort Worth, Texas, also in the youth senior division.
Smyrna-Clayton Little Lass is hosting a softball camp Aug. 23-27 for ages 5-13. Camp will start at 6 p.m. daily with check-in starting at 5:30 p.m.

The 14th annual Olde Tyme Peach Festival 5K will be held Saturday, Aug. 21 at Silver Lake Park in Middletown. The event starts at 8 a.m. and will be held rain or shine. Registration starts at 7 a.m., and a Kiddie K begins at 7:50 a.m.
