The Smyrna High wrestlers put on quite a show in their home opener against Indian River on December 23. Some of the matches ended with quick pins and others came down to close decisions, but they all had one thing in common – each time, the wrestler wearing red and white came out on top. Each individual Smyrna wrestler did his part, and the Eagles pieced together a 74-0 shutout victory over the Indians.

Two games into the 2008-09 season, the Smyrna High boys’ basketball team’s record stood at 0-2, with a pair of division opponents coming up next on the schedule.The Eagles needed to step up and get some wins, and that’s what they did.

Smyrna High’s varsity wrestlers came away with a 41-21 victory in their first dual meet of the season, a trip down to Sussex Tech. Timmy Watts (119), Kurt Bentley (130), Cody Carbine (145), Kenny Boyles (160) and David Brower (171) all pinned their opponents, while David Hershberger (112) won by technical fall for the Eagles.

Students in grades 3-8 can have fun and learn how to play volleyball this winter at the third annual Smyrna Junior Volleyball League, sponsored by the Smyrna High School Athletic Boosters. The league will begin on January 5 and run for six weeks. Sign-up deadline is December 30.

After opening the season with a pair of close losses against Polytech and Cape Henlopen, the Smyrna High boys’ basketball team got back on track with a road win against an overmatched Sussex Tech squad on December 12. The Eagles led 15-0 at the end of the first quarter and cruised to a 69-34 win.

The Smyrna High girls’ basketball team took care of business in a home game against Sussex Tech on December 12 and improved to 3-1 on the season. The Eagles controlled the game and posted a 51-32 victory over the Ravens.

The Smyrna High wrestlers stole the spotlight last weekend at the 2008 Milford Invitational. By the end of the competition, five wrestlers from Smyrna High stood atop the podium as champions in their weight divisions - more than any other school. All 14 Smyrna wrestlers who competed placed in the top five in their respective weight classes at the tournament.

The temperatures are dropping outside, but things are heating up in the Smyrna High natatorium – a sure sign that it’s winter wrestling season in Smyrna. Heading into the 2008-09 campaign, the Eagles have a varsity lineup that’s brimming with returning talent. If the wrestlers can rise up to their full potential, this year’s group might be the best wrestling team Smyrna High has seen in a while.

A total of 54 athletes came out for Smyrna High's indoor track team this winter – 25 guys and 29 girls. “We have a lot of newcomers, and an influx of freshmen,” said coach Lindsay Stevens. “We’re really excited because we have such a large group. We hope a lot of them carry over to spring track.”

The Smyrna High girls’ basketball team came out on the winning end of a dramatic non-conference game against Archmere on Saturday evening. The Eagles surged ahead in the fourth quarter with a 13-0 run, and then held off the Auks’ fierce comeback bid.

The Smyrna High boys’ basketball team tipped off the 2008-09 season on Friday night with a tough battle against Northern Division opponent Polytech. The Eagles put up a strong fight against the tall and athletic Polytech team, but the Panthers pulled away late in the fourth quarter and came away with a 54-47 win.

With a new season about to begin, the Smyrna High varsity girls’ basketball team will try to build on last year’s late-season success. After an 0-8 start last year, the Eagles won nine of their final 13 games to finish with a 9-12 overall record. And now, with most of last year’s roster returning, the girls want to pick up right where they left off. Guiding the team this season will be first-year head coach Danny Wandless, who also coaches Smyrna High’s varsity volleyball team.

The DIAA state tournament is familiar territory for the Smyrna High boys’ basketball team. The Eagles have qualified for the postseason with regularity in recent years, including last season, but that tournament run was cut short with a loss in the first round. Now the goal is to make it back to the tourney, and to make it further this time. The Eagles are set to begin the 2008-09 season with a home game against Polytech on Friday, December 5.

Smyrna High School senior Apostolina signed a letter of intent on November 18 to play for the University at Albany’s softball team. Apostolina received a full-ride athletic scholarship to play softball for the Great Danes, who compete in Division I as a member of the America East Conference.

Smyrna Middle School’s top female cross country runner, Maureen Hossler, has earned the opportunity to compete at Nationals in Alabama on December 6 by finishing 16th at the Regional middle school qualifiers.

“Mighty” Mike Tiberi’s pro boxing career couldn’t have started much better. With six fights under his belt, the 20-year-old middleweight is 6-0 with 3 knockouts. Tiberi, who lives north of Smyrna near Townsend, said he’s been having a great time in the sport of boxing.

After winning first place in the Henlopen Conference cheer competition on October 12, the Smyrna-Clayton Pop Warner Pee Wee cheerleaders took their season to the next level by placing second at the Eastern Regional sectionals in Trenton, New Jersey on October 25. By virtue of their second place finish at the Eastern Regional sectionals, the team will advance to the Region championships on November 16 at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton.
