The Smyrna High girls’ basketball team’s magical run through the state tournament ended one win short of the title. In the state championship game, the No. 4 seeded Eagles fell to No. 2 seed Sanford, 51-36, on March 12 at the University of Delaware’s Bob Carpenter Center.

Nothing was going right for the Smyrna girls in the first half of their state semifinal game on Wednesday night, but the Eagles mounted a furious second-half comeback and beat Cape Henlopen, 59-55. For the first time in program history, the Smyrna High girls’ basketball team will compete in the championship game of the DIAA state tournament. Smyrna will play Sanford for the state championship on Friday, March 12 at the Carpenter Center in Newark. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
The Smyrna High boys’ basketball team made its first appearance at the Bob Carpenter Center on March 7 in the quarterfinals of the DIAA state tournament. Smyrna advanced to the field of eight by knocking off No. 5 seed Hodgson two days earlier, but the No. 12 seeded Eagles couldn’t get past No. 4 seed Concord (17-4) to earn a spot in the state’s final four. Smyrna kept pace with Concord in the first half of the quarterfinal match up, but the Raiders pulled ahead in the third quarter and went on to win, 55-42.
In their first-ever appearance at the University of Delaware's Bob Carpenter Center, the Smyrna High girls' basketball team surged past Caesar Rodney in the second half and secured a 54-39 win in the DIAA state quarterfinals. Now the Smyrna girls are headed to the state semifinals, where they will meet No. 9 seed Cape Henlopen (17-5), who pulled off a 43-41 upset over previously undefeated No. 1 seed St. Mark’s in the quarterfinals. Smyrna’s match up with Cape is scheduled to tip off at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 10 at the Carpenter Center.
For the second season in a row, Smyrna remains standing as one of the final eight teams in the DIAA boys’ basketball tournament. The No. 12 seeded Smyrna Eagles went on the road and knocked off No. 5 seed Hodgson, 54-44, in a second-round state tournament game on Friday night. With that victory, Smyrna earned a trip to the Bob Carpenter Center for a state quarterfinal game against No. 4 seed Concord. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 7 at the University of Delaware's Carpenter Center in Newark.

With a 60-42 home win over 13-seed Archmere on Thursday night, the fourth-seeded Smyrna High girls’ basketball team earned a spot in the DIAA state quarterfinals, where the Eagles will face a familiar opponent - Caesar Rodney. Tip off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 6 at the Carpenter Center in Newark.
The season will continue for the Smyrna High boys’ basketball team. The Eagles advanced to the second round of the DIAA state tournament with a come-from-behind, 52-44 victory over William Penn on March 3 at the Smyrna High gymnasium. In the second round of the tournament, Smyrna will go on the road to face Hodgson, the tournament’s No. 5 seed. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 5.
The SHS boys' basketball team will meet No. 21 William Penn in a first-round tournament game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3 at the Smyrna High gymnasium. A day later, the SHS girls' basketball team will host a second-round state tournament game at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 4 at the Smyrna High gymnasium.
After locking up their eighth straight undefeated season with a 10-0 record, the Smyrna Middle School wrestlers continued their dominance at the 2010 Henlopen Conference middle school wrestling tournament, held Feb. 22 at Milford.
The Smyrna High wrestling team produced eight state place winners, including three state runners-up, at the 2010 DIAA individual state wrestling meet at Sussex Central.

Smyrna High School's Spencer Rhoades and Cody Carbine won the conference title in their respective weight classes Sunday at the Henlopen Conference Tournament at Cape Henlopen High School. In the team standings, Smyrna finished second to Sussex Central.
The U.S. Army Baltimore Recruiting Battalion is proud to announce that Smyrna’s Cody Carbine is this week’s winner of the Army STRONG Wrestler of the Week, honoring Delaware’s best high school wrestlers. Carbine, the second-seed, beat top-seed Jay Matheua of Sussex Central, 4-2, for the 160-pound title at the Henlopen Conference Tournament.
The Smyrna High girls’ basketball team had already clinched the Northern Division title, but the Eagles still had a lot to play for on Wednesday night. In their final regular season game, the Smyrna girls faced the only Delaware team that had beaten them this season – Caesar Rodney. The Riders handed Smyrna a 39-34 loss back in December, but the Eagles avenged that defeat Wednesday night with a thrilling, 74-72 victory in the Smyrna High gymnasium.

In the Division 1 high school wrestling dual meet championship tournament Feb. 23, Smyrna High defeated William Penn in the opening round but lost to Sussex Central in the semifinals at Delaware State University. St. Mark's defeated Sussex Central in the championship match.
For the second year in a row, the Smyrna Middle School girls’ basketball team has won the Capital Classic championship.
Smyrna High School came from behind in the fourth quarter to defeat Sussex Central in boys' basketball action Feb. 20 in Smyrna. Chris Oscar and Andre Gibbs each scored 22 points to lead the Eagles.

The Smyrna High wrestling team lost on the road at Sussex Central 45-17 Friday, Feb. 19 in a match that decided the Henlopen Conference Northern Division title. Both schools were undefeated in the division coming into the contest. Former Smyrna High wrestler Cody Broomall, who recently transferred to Sussex Central, won his debut match for the Knights, 15-7, over the Eagles' Zach Boyles at 140 pounds.
