The Eagles soared to their third straight win and remain tied in the Northern Division standings with Sussex Central and Polytech. This Friday, Oct. 13, Smyrna hosts Sussex Central for Homecoming at 7 p.m.

After an 0-2 start, the Smyrna High School football team won its third straight game with a 54-37 thumping of Caesar Rodney Friday at Camden.

The Eagles jumped out to an 8-0 lead on a three-yard touchdown run by Will Knight and Knight's two-point conversion.

The Riders closed the gap to 8-3 with a 24-yard field goal, but Smyrna responded with a 60-yard touchdown run by Emon Roberts and a two-point conversion by Stephen Whaley.

The Riders pulled to within 16-9 with a touchdown drive just before halftime, but the Eagles blocked the extra point.

In the third quarter, Smyrna took control with two big scores. First, Whaley burst through the defense for a 56-yard touchdown run, then Will Knight scored on a 30-yard jaunt to the end zone. Successful two-point conversions each time gave the Eagles a 32-9 cushion.

After CR returned an interception for a touchdown, Whaley scored two touchdowns in a row, one a 20-yard pass from Isaiah Wilson and the next on a 41-yard run. Successful two-point conversions each time gave the Eagles a 48-15 lead at the end of the third quarter.

The Riders scored on a 15-yard run to start the fourth quarter, and a two-point conversion made the score 48-23.

Smyrna answered quickly with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Aiden Sanchez to Makhi Jackson for a 54-23 lead.

The Riders returned the kickoff for a touchdown and later added a 29-yard touchdown pass for the final 54-37 score.

On defense, Darryl "Debo" Williams led all Eagles with 13 tackles, seven solo, with two for losses including one sack.

Desmond Wilson tallied 11 tackles, seven solo, with six for losses including three sacks.

Diron Accoo had 11 tackles, three solo, with four for losses including two sacks.

Caden Naylor and Tristan Friel each had one sack for the Eagles.

NEXT GAME: On Friday, Oct. 13 for Homecoming, Smyrna will host a showdown with Sussex Central in a game that will help determine the Henlopen Conference Northern Division champion.

The Knights are undefeated at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the division, coming off a 14-6 win over Sussex Tech. Smyrna is 2-0 in the division, 3-2 overall. The third team currently in the north race is Polytech, also 2-0 in the division, with games at Sussex Central Oct. 20 and home vs. Smyrna in the regular season finale Nov. 10.
