After defeating Indian River Monday for the conference title, Smyrna will host a state tournament first-round match Thursday, Nov. 2.

The Smyrna High School volleyball team made it a “three-peat” Monday night.

The Eagles won the Henlopen Conference title for the third year in a row with a 3-0 victory over Indian River in the championship match played at Woodbridge High School.

The match featured Northern Division champ Smyrna against the Southern Division champ. Earlier this season, the Eagles defeated the Indians in a five-set match, coming from behind after dropping the second and third sets.

In the conference championship Monday, the Eagles won more decisively – three sets in a row by scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-20.

Among the statistical leaders for the Eagles were Reece Trabaudo with 30 assists, Julia Lutrell with 15 kills, Kenley Cook with 11 kills and Morgan Holman with 12 digs.

Eagles host state tournament match Nov. 2

Smyrna, now 11-5, has been seeded ninth in the 24-team state volleyball tournament.

The Eagles will host a first-round match against 24-seed Brandywine Thursday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.

The Bulldogs won the Blue Hen Conference Flight B title but lost in the conference championship match to Appoquinimink and are now 11-5. One common opponent of Smyrna and Brandywine was Polytech. The Eagles beat Polytech 3-1 Sept. 21, while Brandywine lost to the Panthers 3-0 Oct. 2.

If the Eagles win Thursday, they’ll face eight-seed Archmere Academy Saturday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m., at Salesianum High School. Smyrna lost to Archmere 3-0 in the first match of the season.
