In a rematch of the state title game in March, the defending champion Smyrna Eagles basketball team defeated Caravel Academy 74-63 tonight, Dec. 14, at Smyrna High.

The Eagles trailed 17-16 after the first quarter, but took the lead at halftime, 30-28.

Smyrna extended its lead to six points after three quarters, 50-44, and then outscored Caravel 24-19 in the final quarter for the 11-point win.

Caleb Matthews scored 26 points to lead the Eagles, while Greg Bloodsworth hit for 16, and Nalik Veasley-Johnson poured in 13.

Jaymeir Garnett scored nine. Nahshon Sylvester scored seven, and Jakir Hampton added three for the Eagles.

Smyrna hit 16 of 25 free throws (64 percent), while Caravel only hit four of 13 (30.8 percent).

The Eagles improved to 4-0 and take on Sussex Central at home Monday, Dec. 18 at 5:45 p.m.
