After winning the Henlopen North Championship Thursday night and learning they’d be the No. 3 seed in the DIAA state tournament early Friday afternoon, the Smyrna Eagles took the court for the Henlopen Conference Championship downing Henlopen South Division Champion Woodbridge, 65-49, to take the overall conference title.
A tight contest through three quarters, the Eagles pulled away in the fourth, winning by 16 after holding just a two-point advantage heading into the final stanza.
Smyrna held a two-point lead after one quarter and a three-point advantage at halftime, a deficit the Blue Raiders would cut into in the third, trailing 43-41. However, in the fourth quarter, the Eagles outscored Woodbridge 22-8 to win going away.
Hassan Corbin led all scorers Friday night, scoring a game-high 28 points for the Blue Raiders, while teammates Jamon Kane, Troy Haynes and Kejon Mosley all finished with seven points apiece in the loss.
Four Eagles finished in double-figures, led by Jaymeir Garnett’s 20 points. Caleb Matthews added 13 points, while Greg Bloodsworth and Nalik Veasley both finished with 13 points in the win for Smyrna.
Woodbridge now prepares for their first round matchup in the state tournament Tuesday when they’ll host No. 19 Indian River at 6:30 p.m. A win would set up a rematch of Friday night’s conference title as the winner of Woodbridge/Indian River will get the No. 3 Eagles in the second round Thursday at Smyrna.
