In a battle of two of the top softball teams in Delaware, the Eagles soared over the Bucs 7-0 at Smyrna's special tribute game fundraiser, "Play for Donnie," in memory of former coach Donnie Shaner, to benefit the Gift of Life Family House.
The Smyrna High School softball team improved to 14-1 Friday with a 7-0 shutout of Caravel Academy which entered the game with only one loss.
The game was the team's annual "Play for Donnie" tribute in memory of former coach Donnie Shaner, to benefit the Gift of Life Family House which helped the Shaner family when Donnie was in Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia.
The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second inning, and increased it to 2-0 in the third.
A three-run fifth inning gave Smyrna a 5-0 advantage, and then the Eagles tacked on two more in the sixth.
Smyrna pitcher Jessica Anderson went the distance for the win, scattering five hits.
Julia Thuer hit a double and knocked in three runs for Smyrna, while Madison Drummond, Kaelyn Press and Olivia Smith had multiple hits.
