After Middletown jumped out to a 14-0 lead, the Eagles clawed back to 14-8 and later trailed 22-14 before the Cavs pulled away for a 41-20 victory tonight at Charles V. Williams Stadium.

The Smyrna High School football team's season opener featured a familiar foe, the Middletown Cavaliers, whom the Eagles defeated in the past two Division I state title games.

Tonight, though, Middletown got a little revenge, jumping out to an early advantage and controlling the game for a 41-20 victory.

After Middletown took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the Eagles clawed back to 14-8 and kept the game close, later trailing 22-14.

But the Cavs pulled away with two more scores before the half for a 35-14 advantage and then cruised to the win.

For the Eagles, Stephen Whaley scored two touchdowns on the ground, while Devin Smith caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Aiden Sanchez.
