The three-time defending Division I state champion Smyrna High School football team opened the 2018 season at home, hosting a familiar foe -- Middletown.
The Eagles and Cavaliers have faced each other in the past two state title games, with Smyrna prevailing each time.
The teams faced each other twice last year. In last year's regular season opener in Middletown, the Cavaliers were victorious, but Smyrna bounced back to knock off the Cavs in the championship game.
A packed house greeted the teams at Charles V. Williams Stadium Friday night.
This year, Middletown again prevailed in the regular season, knocking off the Eagles 41-20.
After Middletown took a 14-0 lead in the first quarter, the Eagles clawed back to 14-8 and kept the game close, later trailing 22-14.
But the Cavs pulled away with two more scores before the half for a 35-14 advantage and then cruised to the win.
For the Eagles, Stephen Whaley scored two touchdowns on the ground, while Devin Smith caught a 22-yard scoring pass from Aiden Sanchez.
Smyrna fans are hoping history repeats itself and that the Eagles persevere through the season for a rematch in the state championship game.
NEXT GAME: Friday, Sept. 14 at Franklin, Maryland, 7 p.m.
