Sussex Central took control of the Henlopen Conference Northern Division and the automatic state tournament berth that comes with winning the division title after a 31-12 victory Friday.

The Smyrna High School football team fell to 2-3 with a 31-12 loss at Sussex Central Friday night.

More importantly, the Eagles lost control of the Henlopen Conference Northern Division and the automatic state tournament berth that comes with winning the division title. Smyrna is now 2-1 in the division, while Sussex Central is 3-0.

The Golden Knights jumped out to a 14-0 advantage and led the entire game.

For the Eagles, Stephen Whaley scored on a five-yard run and Makhi Jackson caught a 10-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Aidan Sanchez.

NEXT GAME: Friday, Oct. 19, Smyrna's Homecoming game vs. Dover, 7 p.m. The Senators are 5-1 after a 59-20 win over Sussex Tech Friday night. Dover's one loss was to Sussex Central, 21-0.
