SHS boys' basketball to host tourney game Wednesday

The 14-6 Smyrna High boys' basketball team received the No. 12 seed in the DIAA state tournament, good enough to secure home court in the opening round.

The Eagles will meet No. 21 William Penn in a first-round tournament game at 7 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, March 3 at the Smyrna High gymnasium.

If the Eagles win, they will go on the road to play No. 5 Hodgson (17-3) in the second round.

SHS girls' basketall to host second-round game Thursday

After wrapping up the regular season with an 18-2 record, the Smyrna High girls’ basketball team received the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye in the DIAA state tournament.

The Eagles are scheduled to host a second-round state tournament game at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 4 at the Smyrna High gymnasium.

Smyrna will face the winner of a first-round game between 13-seed Archmere (15-4) and 20-seed Christiana (12-6).

Somewhat surprisingly, the DIAA’s index for tournament seeding gave Dover (12-5) the No. 3 seed, ahead of Smyrna, even though the Eagles beat the Senators twice in the regular season. Strength of schedule is a major factor in the index.

Undefeated St. Mark’s (18-0) earned the tournament’s top seed, while Sanford (15-4) received the No. 2 slot.
