Smyrna native James McCormick, the head football coach at North Caroline High School in Ridgely, Md., earned a unique coaching distinction this fall.
McCormick was selected Baltimore Ravens coach of the week after the Bulldogs opened the season 3-0.
“It was a big surprise,” McCormick said. “It’s a great honor, not just for me, but for our program and our school, and football on the Eastern Shore.”
McCormick has been the head football coach at North Caroline for nine seasons. He also teaches social studies at the school.
“It’s a very rural area,” he said. “It’s about like Smyrna used to be 20 years ago.”
This fall, McCormick led the Bulldogs to an 8-2 record in the regular season and a berth in the state playoffs, where they were beaten in the opening round.
It was North Caroline’s fourth trip to playoffs under coach McCormick.
Along with the other Ravens coaches of the week from the past season, McCormick was recognized at the Baltimore Ravens’ home game against the Detroit Loins on Dec. 13. McCormick and the other selected coaches were introduced between the third and fourth quarters of the game.
In addition, North Caroline’s football program received a $2,000 donation, and McCormick received an award certificate signed by Ravens head coach John Harbaugh and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
McCormick, a class of 1990 Smyrna High School graduate, played quarterback and safety during his high school days at Smyrna. He also went on to play college ball at Salisbury University.
