The Smyrna High baseball team has shown improvement late in the season, and it’s starting to pay off with wins.
On Friday night, the Eagles won a thrilling game against Laurel at Frawley Stadium, where the Wilmington Blue Rocks play.
The Eagles edged the Bulldogs 9-8 after scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Smyrna coach Scott Cole said over 200 people showed up to support the team “in what we consider a great opportunity for the Eagle players.”
“All 20 players were in the game so everyone could share in the opportunity to say they played at Frawley Stadium,” he said.
Smyrna and Laurel both honored their senior leaders at the game, but for Smyrna, the underclassmen also helped lead the team to victory.
Sophomore Derek Knight had two hits, two RBI and scored the winning run for the Eagles.
Freshman Gary Everage had three hits, four RBI and drove in the winning run.
Coach Cole said seniors Rob Spence, David Brower and Brandon Walker all showed tremendous leadership.
Junior Andrew Hutchinson picked up the win as he came in as a relief pitcher in the seventh.
Eagles defeat Delmarva Christian
Smyrna also picked up a win earlier last week against Delmarva Christian. Smyrna pitcher Pat Hoye pitched a complete game and the Eagles won 5-4.
