Smyrna Middle School girls win 2010 Capital Classic

For the second year in a row, the Smyrna Middle School girls’ basketball team has won the Capital Classic championship.

The Eagles finished the season with a 12-1 record after defeating Seaford and Woodbridge on their way to the 2010 Capital Classic title.

The annual middle school basketball tournament, which was postponed this year due to weather, was finally held Feb. 18-20 at Dover Central Middle School.

In the championship game on Saturday, the Eagles avenged their only loss of the season by defeating No. 2 seed Woodbridge 43-36. In the regular season game between the two teams, the Raiders prevailed 36-32.

Smyrna’s Alexus Stroud scored 21 points in the championship game. She ended her season with 249 points and her middle school career with 371. Alyson Davis added 15 to total 149 for the season and 178 for her middle school career. Aniya Jones scored five, while Heaven Bailey scored two in the Eagles’ victory.

The Eagles, who received the tournament’s No. 4 seed, knocked off top-seeded Seaford 44-39 on Friday night to advance to the championship game.

Alexus Stroud posted 28 points for the Lady Eagles, while Alyson Davis scored 14. Aniya Jones and Kalia Dewar each added two points for the win. Amber Carrow, Heaven Bailey, and Brielle Zehner added strong defense to hold back the Blue Jays.

Alexus Stroud, Alyson Davis and Aniya Jones were each named to the Capital Classic all-tournament team. Stroud was also named all-tournament MVP.

Brielle Zehner received the first place sportsmanship award.

SMS boys’ basketball takes third

The Smyrna Middle School boys' basketball team defeated Seaford in the 2010 Capital Classic consolation bracket on Saturday to win third place in the tournament. Todd Hughes was named to the all-tournament team for his outstanding performance.
