SHS wrestling squad produces three state runners-up

The Smyrna High wrestling team produced eight state place winners, including three state runners-up, at the 2010 DIAA individual state wrestling meet at Sussex Central.

Spencer Rhoades (112), Kenny Boyles (152) and Cody Carbine (160) each finished second place in the state for the Eagles.

Rhoades won a 15-6 major decision over Sanford’s Parker Landau in the state semifinals, but was pinned by Tyler Pendergast of St. Mark’s in the finals.

Boyles defeated Sussex Central’s Shane Miller by technical fall in the semifinals before dropping a 5-2 decision to Caesar Rodney’s Issah Meade in the finals.

Carbine won a 10-5 decision over Austin Glessner of St. Andrew’s in the semifinals, but was edged 3-1 in the finals by Jay Matheus of St. Mark’s.

Five other Smyrna wrestlers also placed at the state tournament.

David Hershberger (119) and Brandon Poffenberger (125) both took fourth place in the state.

Zach Boyles (140), Tyler Foster (145) and Barry Reece (285) all finished fifth in the state.
