On Thursday, May 28, Nascar driver Peyton Sellers brought his show car to Southern States in Clayton. In addition to meeting the public, he accepted decals of Kay’s Kamp logo that will be placed on his #77 SFP Chevrolet in Saturday’s race at Dover International Speedway.
Kay’s Kamp, a free week away for children being treated for or in remission from cancer, is scheduled to open in August at St. Joseph’s Center for Community Service in Clayton. It will be one of a handful of such camps in the nation and the first in Delaware.
The getaway for these special children is made possible though a foundation created by Laurie and Bill Warren of Bear, Delaware, in memory of their 17-year-old daughter Kaylyn, who lost a courageous battle with leukemia in March 2007.
The Warrens, with the assistance of many dedicated volunteers, have worked tirelessly in fundraising, coordination with health care professionals and institutions, and ongoing organizational activities to grant Kaylyn’s last wish of a place where children with life-threatening illness can go to spend time away from hospitals and enjoy themselves.
“This meeting is certain to be both an exciting and emotional time as Nationwide Series driver Peyton Sellers meets Laurie Warren, Kaylyn’s mother and the Kay's Kamp group in person. It will be a wonderful example of how the Nascar racing family reaches out in the state of Delaware,” said Jean Beamer, one of the volunteers who is helping to organize the camp.
