The Smyrna Middle School wrestlers got a spirited fight from visiting Woodbridge on Jan. 14, but the Eagles would not be denied their 84th straight victory.
Going into the final match of the dual meet, the wrestlers from Woodbridge’s Phillis Wheatley Middle School were only behind by five points and still within striking distance.
So it came down to Smyrna’s Sean Holden (148) to close it out for the Eagles.
Heading onto the mat, Holden was thinking to himself “I’ve got to win this,” he said after the match.
Holden took care of business with a 12-1 major decision, and Smyrna’s winning streak continued with a 46-37 victory over Phillis Wheatley.
Earlier in the dual meet, Smyrna received a timely pin from Jarren Wilson (136) that give the Eagles a little breathing room, but Wheatley answered with a pin to keep it close heading into the final match.
Smyrna improved to 5-0 on the season with the win, which was also the 84th in a row for the Smyrna Middle School program.
On Jan. 12, the Eagles notched a 64-22 road win over Caesar Rodney’s Postlethwait Middle School.
This week, the SMS wrestlers will face a tough match against undefeated Dover Central, scheduled for 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 21 at the SMS gymnasium.
