On paper, it looked like the Smyrna Middle School wrestlers might have an evenly matched opponent on their hands when Dover Central came to town on Jan. 21.

Both teams headed into the match with undefeated records, and both had previously won close contests against Woodbridge.

But once again, the Eagles rose to the occasion, just as they have in every other match over the past eight seasons.

It was clear that the Smyrna wrestlers were firmly in control after they surged out to a 41-10 lead.

The Dover wrestlers battled back, though, and closed the gap by reeling off some wins late in the dual meet, but they couldn’t catch the Eagles.

In the end, Smyrna came away with a 47-31 victory and the program’s 85th consecutive win. The Eagles haven’t lost a dual meet since 2002.

“We wrestled really strong today,” said SMS head wrestling coach Steve Stewart after the match.

The Eagles improved their record to 6-0 on the season with the win.

SMS wrestler Jarren Wilson (136) said it was important for the Smyrna wrestlers to stay off their backs and save team points, and for the kids who typically get pins to go out and do it again.

For the most part, that’s what the Eagles were able to accomplish against a tough Dover team.

“It feels great any time we come out with a win,” Wilson said. “Hopefully we’ll go undefeated.”
