This fall, hunters will encounter a number of changes in regulations, including a new crossbow season, a statewide red fox season, use of pellet firearms for squirrel hunting and licensing changes.

Brothers Kurt, Dicky and Brad Howell brought their summer wrestling technique and training camp to Smyrna this year.The camp, held the week of July 5-9 at Smyrna Middle School, featured guest clinicians who starred at the Olympic, collegiate and high school levels.
The 24th Annual Youth Fishing Tournament was held June 12, with nine-year-old Ben Newlin of Milford winning the overall state title after catching 4.27 pounds of fish.
“I like being a perfectionist about certain things,” says Smyrna High student Chelsea Botsch. That’s certainly the case when it comes to softball, where her pursuit of perfection serves her well on the pitching mound. Over the years, she has spent countless hours practicing and refining her pitching motion – “constant repetition to make sure you’re doing it right.”
And all that work pays off at game time. This spring, in her junior year, Botsch helped lead the Smyrna High varsity softball team to its best season in years. At season’s end, Botsch was selected first team all-state.

Though it’s been quite some time since the end of his baseball career, lifelong Smyrna resident Gene Handsberry was recently recognized for his past accomplishments in the sport. Handsberry was inducted into the Delaware Baseball Hall of Fame at a June 10 ceremony, held in the fourth inning of the Blue-Gold high school all-star baseball game at Frawley Stadium in Wilmington.

The Delaware Division of Fish & Wildlife is sponsoring a fishing tournament Saturday, June 12 for ages 4-15 at three locations: Lums Pond State Park in Bear, the Wyoming Pond in Wyoming south of Dover, and Ingrams Pond in Millsboro, Sussex County. The Smyrna High softball team played in its second straight 10-inning heart-stopper on Thursday, but this time the game ended in heartbreak for the Eagles. In the state semifinals, the No. 3 seeded Smyrna girls fell to No. 10 seed Milford, the defending state champions, by a 5-4 final score after 10 innings of tense play on June 3 at Caesar Rodney High School.
A grueling pitchers’ duel, nine scoreless innings, a go-ahead run in the top of the 10th, and a come-from-behind win in the bottom of the inning. It all happened in a state quarterfinal softball game between No. 3 seed Smyrna and No. 6 seed Archmere on Tuesday, June 1 at Smyrna High’s Jo Carter Field.
After winning in the first round on May 29, the Smyrna High softball team will now host another home game in the quarterfinals of the state tournament at 3:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, June 1.
Smyrna took care of business against Wilmington Charter in the first round of the state softball tournament on Saturday. The No. 3 seeded Eagles (16-3) blanked No. 14 seed Charter in a 4-0 shut out on May 29 at Smyrna’s Jo Carter Field.
With a 15-3 record, the Smyrna High School softball team pulled in the No. 3 seed in the state tournament, which begins Saturday, May 29.
A total of 67 people competed in the Firefly 5K Run/Walk on May 26 in Smyrna, and the top finishers were Michael Sewell and Jessica Moyer.

The Smyrna Downtown Renaissance Association will host the Sixth Annual Firefly 5K Run/Walk on Wednesday, May 26 at 7 p.m. with registration beginning at 6 p.m. at the Smyrna Health & Wellness Center on South Main Street.
