Good news for drivers that didn't trade their Clunkers

Drivers with late model cars that did not qualify for the federal “Cash for Clunkers” program and those that did qualify but could not afford to participate, should be glad to learn that keeping a vehicle running efficiently is a very sensible alternative.

Motorists that commit to regular maintenance end up saving a lot of money. In fact, according to Runzheimer International, the difference in the savings over four years between keeping a car and buying a new one is more than $10,000.

With those numbers -- even with the “Clunker” incentive -- maintaining your vehicle is still the best economic option.

For reliability, safety and extending vehicle life, the Car Care Council recommends these preventive maintenance steps:

  • Change the oil and filter every 3,000 - 5,000 miles or per the owner’s manual. Periodic oil and filter changes keep your engine clean inside.
  • Check the tire pressure at least monthly, including the spare. Tires affect a car’s ride, handling, traction and safety.
  • Schedule a tune-up annually to optimize performance. A well-tuned engine delivers the best balance of power and fuel economy, and produces the lowest emissions.
  • Have the alignment checked at least annually. Potholes, other road conditions and even normal wear can take a toll on steering and suspension. A wheel alignment reduces tire wear, improves fuel economy, handling, driving enjoyment and safety.
  • Inspect the windshield wipers and lights regularly. They play a major role in safe driving, and are normal wear items that need periodic replacement.
