Dover —
Delaware's Stand By Me Financial Empowerment Program will make national headlines when the director, a local hotel manager who also uses the service, will present to the President's Advisory Council on Financial Capability on Thursday.
Stand By Me, a joint project from the state and the United Way of Delaware, provides one-on-one financial coaching to low- and moderate-income Delawareans, while also helping navigate financial aid applications, alternatives to payday loans, assistance with credit scores and financial planning support to increase economic security.
Mary Dupont, director of Stand By Me and director of Financial Empowerment in the Department of Health and Social Services, will present before the council with Brad Wenger, general manager of the Christiana Hilton. Wenger's testimony will include stories of the impact Stand By Me has had on his employees.
"Financial stability is not an issue of concern only to nonprofits and public agencies," Dupont said in a press release. "We can see that in Delaware, this is also important to employers and community colleges. They worry about the financial well-being of their workforce because when workers do well, so do employers. When students are successful, the school wins."
The service was launched at the Hudson State Service Center in May 2011, and has expanded to ShopRite Supermarkets, the Chrstiana Hilton and Delaware Technical & Community College, Wilmington and Stanton. There are plans to expand to Dover Downs and select Walgreens locations.
The Delaware Community Foundation recently granted $80,000 to the United Way of Delaware to support an expansion of the program. The goal is to serve about 6,000 clients over the next three years.
