Walking down the halls of Smyrna Middle School this year, there’s a new face in the crowd as Carol Brennan is one of the many first-year teachers starting their education careers in Smyrna. With her love of reading and writing, she’s teaching English and Language arts to the students at Smyrna Middle School. She also is working with the Positive Behavior Support program with the school.
Brennan took time to explain to the Sun-Times why she wanted to become a teacher and the challenges of being a new educator.
Q What inspired you to be a teacher?
A I began working with kids when I was 15 and really enjoyed it. The excitement on a child's face when they finally get something is, well for lack of a better way of saying it, priceless.
Q How did you decide on the grade and subject you teach?
A I always liked middle school students. They are challenging and funny. They are also at an age where they still show enthusiasm for learning new things. Choosing English was easy because I have always loved reading and writing. My goal is to pass on my passion to my students.
Q What, so far, do you enjoy about teaching in the Smyrna School District?
A I enjoy teaching in the SSD because everyone is so helpful and enthusiastic. The programs they are developing are forward thinking with a focus on doing the best for their students.
Q What is most challenging as a teacher? Why?
A I find the most challenging part of teaching in a technology driven age is developing lessons that are both interesting and exciting. I strive to create lessons that capture the attention of my students and ignite a desire to learn more.
Q What's been your most memorable moment so far?
A There have been many memorable moments, but what I have enjoyed the most is getting to know my students as individuals.
Q What qualities do you feel make up a good teacher?
A I feel that the most important qualities in a good teacher are their excitement about what they are doing, and a genuine love and respect for their students. If they possess these qualities, they will acquire what is necessary to teach their subject area, and they will make sure they provide the necessary skills for their students to succeed.
