During a traffic stop Friday near Garrisons Lake, Delaware State Police discovered a loaded handgun in possession of a Smyrna man prohibited from having one.

The incident happened at about 6:56 p.m., as a trooper was conducting traffic enforcement on U.S. Route 13 near Messina Hill Road south of Garrisons Lake, near Cheswold.

The trooper saw a white Nissan Maxima traveling north on U.S. Route 13 at a speed greater than the posted speed limit. The trooper then conducted a traffic stop of the Nissan and talked with the driver, later identified as John Geist, 44, of Smyrna.

During a consent search of the Nissan, the trooper found a fully loaded Ruger 9mm handgun, as well as a second fully loaded magazine, under the driver’s seat, police said. A computer check revealed that Geist was prohibited from possessing a firearm and ammunition due to a previous felony conviction.

Geist was arrested and taken to Troop 9 where he was charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited from having one, and possession of ammunition by a person prohibited from having it, police said.

He was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 2 and released on $12,000 unsecured bail to await another court appearance.
