The treasurer of the Smyrna Elementary School Parent Teacher Organization was arrested Tuesday on charges of stealing about $11,000 from the organization.
Smyrna Police Department detectives were notified in March of suspected internal thefts from the PTO account.
An investigation was launched which culminated in the arrest of Kellie Sullivan-McGovern, 39, of Smyrna, on Aug. 2, police said.
Investigators determined that over nearly two years, Sullivan-McGovern used a debit card issued to her as treasurer for the organization and made unauthorized and unlawful personal purchases as well as ATM cash withdrawals.
Her purchases were made at a variety of locations including gas stations and liquor stores, and also included baseball tickets, jewelry and clothing, police said.
The total loss to the Smyrna Elementary PTO is estimated to be approximately $11,000, police said.
Sullivan-McGovern was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 7 on two counts of felony theft of $1,500 or greater, 136 counts of unlawful use of a payment card and one count of falsifying business records.
She was released on $7,850 unsecured bond after her arraignment while awaiting another court hearing.
