The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a tow truck crash in which two Dover residents were injured Thursday evening on Route 1 south of Smyrna.

At about 5:53 p.m., William D. Jayne, 46, of Dover, was driving a 2005 International tow truck for D&D Towing south on Route 1 near Twin Willows Road when the front tire blew out.

Jayne lost control of the truck and traveled off the west side of the road, spun and struck a tree, according to Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.

The impact with the tree caused the truck to rotate violently and overturn, ejecting Jayne from the vehicle. He was not properly restrained, Fournier said.

The truck came to a stop in a tree line west of Route 1.

Jayne was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital where he was listed in critical condition, Founier said.

His wife, Tina I. Jayne, 52 of Dover, was a passenger in the truck. She was properly restrained, but was trapped inside the vehicle until fire company crews freed her from the wreckage, Fournier said. She was taken to Bayhealth Kent General Hospital and later released with non-life-threatening injuries.

Emergency crews closed lanes intermittently on southbound Route 1 near exit 114 for about four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared, Fournier said.
