Police charged 45-year-old Leonard F. Stielper, of Lewes, with third offense driving under the influence of alcohol, a felony, after stopping him in Rehoboth Beach for a traffic violation.
On the evening of Monday, Jan. 30, around 9:15 p.m., a Rehoboth Beach police officer observed Stielper making an illegal turn onto Rehoboth Avenue from State Road, through a median crossover designated for opposing traffic. When the officer attempted to stop Stielper, he initially came to a stop in the middle of the roadway before pulling into a parking lot.
Upon initially contacting him, the officer observed that Stielper’s speech was slurred and that he showed signs of impairment. After a standardized field sobriety test during which he showed additional signs of impairment, Stielper was taken into custody and transported to the Rehoboth Beach Police Department, where further blood alcohol testing was conducted.
Stielper was arrested and charged with felony third-offense driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and various traffic violations before being committed to Sussex Correctional Institution in lieu of $3,650 secured bail.
