Widener University recognized George Class-Peters, of Smyrna, as a winner of the Widener University High School Leadership Awards.

In its sixth year, the program is recognizing 174 students from high schools throughout the region for their abilities to stand up for what is right, address a wrong and make a difference in their communities or schools.

Class-Peters, from Smyrna High School, initiated the Smyrna Youth Leadership Organization. With this group, he regularly mentors eighth-grade students in skills such as leadership and time management.

Winners are invited to a celebratory breakfast March 23 at the National Constitution Center, as well as a leadership conference at Widener University in fall 2017. Winners will receive a scholarship of $20,000 over four years, should they enroll at Widener University for undergraduate studies.
