Author Chris Brown will present “The Road to Jim Crow: the African American Struggle on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, 1860-1915” at 11 a.m. May 26 at the Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester, 1003 Greenway Drive, Cambridge, Maryland.
Brown has broken new ground and filled a gap in Maryland’s Eastern Shore history. He follows the journey from the end of slavery and all that promises through the reality of the lynch law, segregation and systematic efforts at disenfranchisement.
Brown is a retired civil rights attorney and professor at the University of Maryland’s Carey School of Law. The stories that Brown has unearthed during research for the book also serve to inspire. Brown will have copies of his book for sale with his autograph.
This series is offered by the Dorchester County Historical Society. The presentation is free, though donations will be accepted.
