Leading off a two-week stretch of special events to highlight Smyrna’s 250th anniversary celebration, First Presbyterian Church hosted “Songs of the America Revolution and a Tribute to Patriot Allen McLane” Sunday evening.
Kathy Rhodes and Kristin Jones, the Celestial Duo, performed songs about the American Revolution and described the history behind the music. They also performed the song created for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, “Allen McLane,” about the Smyrna patriot who was one of Gen. George Washington’s spies.
Then a short historical drama was performed by Tom Welch and Ray Yarnall about McLane and fellow Revolutionary War figure Richard Bassett of Dover.
A reception after the program featured a 250th birthday cake for the town and toasts with a special “Cherry Bounce” beverage created by The Painted Stave in Smyrna using a recipe from Martha Washington.
While events celebrating of the town’s founding are happening throughout the year, the main events are schedule over the next two weeks including the Smyrna at Night music festival Friday, June 29, the Fourth of July parade and fireworks, and a carnival at Wright Muncipal Park July 3-7.
