First State Military Academy Raiders team won the school’s first state championship by winning the Eastern Shore Championship at Smyrna High School on Dec. 1.
In addition to taking the overall trophy, the nine-member team won first place in litter carry, physical fitness test and 5K formation run.
The team placed second in the vehicle pull, three seconds behind the winner, and second in the rope bridge, seven seconds behind the winning team.
“I’m very proud of them,” said Gunnery Sgt. Robert Breneman, U.S. Marine Corps, retired. “These nine cadets won the championship, but it was the other team members pushing them all season that helped us get first place today.”
The team also took top honors in the individual physical training category, with Cadet/1st Lt. Cole Pope taking top male competitor and Cadet/Sgt. Isabella Dunning taking top female competitor. The physical training event included the most push-ups and sit-ups in two minutes plus a 1-mile run.
FSMA’s Raider team includes seniors Alexander Hammerstrom and Galvin Rosetti, juniors Cole Pope and Isabella Dunning, sophomores Damian Alexander, Hunter Saunders and Robert Andrews, and freshmen Paige Holowka and Kyndall Wyngaard.
Besides FSMA, teams from Appoquinimink, Middletown, Dover, Sussex Tech, Smyrna, Woodbridge Mt. Pleasant and Wicomico High Schools participated in the championship.
