Some fun First State events to dive into this weekend.

1. The beloved Cat in the Hat will share a tale with children about a kind elephant (Horton) in the whimsical “Seussical.”

This young-adult musical follows Horton, who discovers a speck of dust containing a strange race of people called Whos. Somehow Horton is tasked with protecting the Whos and guarding an abandoned egg.

Bubbling with vibrant musical numbers, the zany “Seussical” will hit the stage at the Delaware Children’s Theatre, 1014 Delaware Ave., Wilmington at 2 p.m., Saturday and Sunday. COST $14-$15. INFO or 655-1044.

2. Some of us break. Others are benders. One Philly cover band has made it known they’re the latter.

The Benderz is a touring cover band that’s well-schooled in the art of entertaining.

The Philly band will get the party started in the Fire & Ice Lounge of Dover Downs Hotel & Casino at 8:30 p.m., Friday. COST Free. INFO or 674-4600.

3. The tribute scene is going strong these days. Proof of that is “Close to You: Music of The Carpenters.”

A namesake of the band’s 1970 album, the “Close to You” program is led by veteran artist Lisa Rock.

She’s written more than 15 original concerts and cabarets performed to sold-out crowds across the country.

Rock has a six-piece band, complete with back-up singers, that’s dedicated to creating a Carpenters experience that fans will eat up like a free buffet.

The music of The Carpenters will be held at the Milton Theatre

110 Union St., Milton at 8 p.m., Friday. COST $25-$30. INFO or 684-3038.
