The Downstate Delaware Striders and Riders (DDSR), a running and cycling club, has awarded thousands of dollars in scholarships to five 2016 graduates from three Kent County high schools.

Elainah Boyles, of Polytech High School, Adam Bailey, of Smyrna High School, and Hannah Griffiths, also of Smyrna High School, were winners of the DDSR Laura Gondeck Memorial Scholarship. Boyles received a $1,000 scholarship award. Bailey and Griffiths each received $500 awards.

Two Caesar Rodney High School students, Kirsten Grismer and Lauren Grismer, received the club’s Addie Lessard Scholarship. Both students received $500 scholarship awards.

The scholarships are awarded in memory of former club members Laura Gondeck, who died in 2010, and Addie Lessard, who died in 2013.

DDSR’s annual scholarships are awarded to graduating Kent County high school students who are members of their schools’ cross-country or track and field teams.  Members of DDSR train together to promote fitness and well-being through running and cycling. The club, which organizes the popular Great Wyoming Buffalo Stampede 5K and 10K Race every July and the Leap Frog Bicycle Tour each June, supports local charitable events that benefit organizations including the Adopt-a- Family, Delaware Hospice, Delaware Technical and Community College, the Girl Scouts, and Habitat for Humanity, just to name a few.
