No. 8 Smyrna fell to No. 1 Cape Henlopen, 2-0, in the opening round of the Division II DIAA Field Hockey State Tournament on Thursday afternoon.

Despite a strong defensive effort by Smyrna, Cape was able to tally goals in the first and second halves, walking away with the shutout win.

Senior Alia Marshall opened the scoring for Cape Henlopen in the first, while junior Cameron Smith added a goal late in the second half to help the Lady Vikings advance.

Cape outshot Smyrna 20-0 and 18-0 in corners.

Cape Henlopen moves onto the semifinals on Tuesday, taking on No. 4 Polytech who defeated No. 5 Sussex Tech in the opening round Thursday.

Cape Henlopen and Polytech will meet Tuesday at University of Delaware’s Rullo Stadium, start time is still to be announced.
