Girl Scout Troop 547 launches shoe drive fundraiser for international trip

Delaware News Desk
Olivia Bruno, a scout with Girl Scout Troop 547, shows off bags of shoes collected as part of the troop’s fundraiser collecting new, used and gently worn shoes.

Girl Scout Troop 547 will hold a shoe drive fundraiser from May 10 through June 25 to raise funds for their international trip, scheduled for June 2022.

The troop is working with an organization called Funds2Orgs and will earn funds based on the total weight of the pairs of gently worn, used and new shoes collected. They are collecting all shoe styles and sizes, with a goal of collecting 2,500 pairs of shoes.

Donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise/small business partners. Funds2Orgs works with micro-entrepreneurs in helping them create, maintain and grow small businesses in developing countries where economic opportunity and jobs are limited. Proceeds from the sales of the shoes collected in shoe drive fundraisers are used to feed, clothe and house their families.

The girls chose this fundraiser because it helps everyone: most people have extra shoes in their closets they can donate to the troop, collected shoes find a new use and don’t wind up in landfills, shoes collected help others build a future for their families — and the girls raise money for their trip.

Donated shoes can be dropped off on the porch of 56 Elwood Drive, Smyrna; or, for pickup, email troop0547@gmail.com or call and leave a message to 242-4250.
