The driver of a motorcycle and his passenger died Monday night after a minivan that was trying to pass another car hit the motorcycle head-on near Townsend, Delaware State Police said.

Troopers were called to Route 71 (Summit Bridge Road) and Green Giant Road just before 9:30 p.m. for reports of the wreck.

Police found the driver of the motorcycle, 68-year-old Joseph Sturek, dead. His 63-year-old wife, Deborah, was severely injured. She later died at a hospital.

According to police, the minivan was driving east on Green Giant Road toward its intersection with Route 71 when it crossed over the solid double-yellow line to pass the car in front of it.

The motorcycle was coming from the opposite direction and was hit head-on by the driver of the minivan, an 18-year-old, as he tried to pass. The teen was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

Police said they don't believe he was impaired at the time of the wreck.

Troopers closed Green Giant Road between Wiggins Mill Road and Route 71 for about four hours while they investigated. They are still investigating and have not filed any charges.
